These guys ....... Wow ...... They're such classic rock icons that nothing I say will really do 'em justice, especially since Whole Lotta Love is the first Led Zeppelin song I remember hearing. There's so much goin on here, I'll admit, the first few times through I didn't quite get it. But once I did, it was like nothing I'd ever heard or experienced before. I was shook ! (shook me all night long....haha) Ya know, I mentioned before that when I heard the Alice Cooper song No more Mr.Nice Guy and the Black Sabbath song Paranoid, I didn't really get it at first. And I mean I didn't get it in a "Huh, yeah whatever" kind of way. I didn't get this song either, but it was more like " Wait, what ? What's this ? what are they doin ? I gotta check that out again" kind of way. Really I'm just glad I didn't give up on this after the first go around. As a little kid, this song actually scared me. See, one day I went down in the basement because there was a really bad thunderstorm goin on. Like, bad enough we might have a tornado on our hands. A diversion seemed like a good idea, so I flipped on the turntable expecting to hear my favorite classic rock song Wipeout by rock artists The Surfaris. Instead, I got introduced to this legendary hit. Although I'd never heard it before, this song was pretty cool so I kept jammin on it. What a nice diversion ! Then it got to the interlude, or bridge or whatever it is. All that weirdness mixed in with the thunder ,lightning, and howling wind outside. The house was groaning and getting pelted by it raining sideways, and I was sitting in the dark even though it was daytime. Everything was in time with all the cymbal clangs, trippy guitar effects, and Robert Plant moaning and screaming. I imagine it's probably what a bad trip is like. My own personal Wizard of Oz nightmare in real life ! It was freakin me out man ! So I flipped that old vinyl 45 over and listened to Living Loving Maid a few times instead. Then I loaded up the carousel with more familiar and mellow stuff like Let It Be, Hey Jude, and whatever else. When things calmed down outside a little, I put this song right back on again. Even though it scared the crap out of me, I could tell there was something major goin on there. I couldn't wait to get right back to it, that's how good it really is. Obviously Led Zeppelin has A LOT of great songs, but Whole Lotta Love will forever be one of my favorites.
