To me as a kid, I considered the Dr. John song Right place, Wrong time to be the first rocker from the vinyl LP Don Kirshner Presents Rock Power. While it wasn't as intense as the classic rock hit Let It Ride by BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive), Right Place, Wrong Time was a prime example of the diverse range of rock artists and sounds emerging during this era. These dudes were just steady rockin from from start to finish. Even though the Alice Cooper song No More Mr. Nice Guy was the first actual rock track, it felt pretty poppy to me. Seemed too commercial, even back then. This song though, wow! This is what it was all about. As usual, I was immediately drawn in right from the start by the funky soundin keyboard with all the effects on it. Dr. John and his crew just started layin it down right off the bat with this one. It was well beyond funky. It was like, super funk. Is that even a thing? Well, it was for me at the time. That’s why I considered it as rock instead of funk. Even though there was nobody screamin or any distorted guitar, even with a horn section and backup singers, it just had so much super funky stank that it really rocked. No wonder Right Place, Wrong Time became Dr. John's biggest hit, resonating with fans of classic rock radio as one of the best songs of the 70s. The only thing they might have gotten wrong was the name, because every time I heard it, I was in the right place at the right time !
