I definitely wish my brother would've left the whole Billion Dollar Babies album behind for this one. Maybe if I would've had more context, I could've appreciated the heaviness of this particular Alice Cooper song. Instead I just kept wonderin- who's this dude singin a pop song about what a bad guy he is ? I just didn't get it yet. No More Mr. Nice Guy showcases Alice Cooper's evolution as a rock artist, and the band's impact on the classic rock genre is undeniable. The musical style was a departure, borrowing heavily from rock artists The Who's "Substitute" and represented a more pop-oriented sound compared to the band's previous hard rock. It marked a shift in the band's public persona and became a Top 40 hit and a staple of Cooper's live shows, having been performed over 2,500 times. Supposedly Cooper wrote the song lyrics about the reactions of his mother's church group to his theatrical stage shows. Saying that there were worse things that he could do with his life and that the "gloves were off now", and he was no longer going to be the "nice guy" the public expected. The song's enduring popularity on classic rock radio solidifies its status as a true classic rock anthem. It's too bad I didn't understand how innovative it was for the times. All in all it's a good thing though. Another step on the path of my evolution, whetting my appetite for more, newer and heavier rock songs. Someday I would even discover what shock rock was ! Thanks Mr. Furnier.
