Between the mature subject matter, and the fast rockin chorus (for my age at the time), what little kid wouldn’t be intrigued by this this classic rock song from the rock artists Five Man Electrical Band ? It’s about another kid who’s a werewolf, and has to be put down by his own dad. Maybe not by todays standards, but for the times, those lyrics were heavy man ! Back when this classic rock song was peaking on the Billboard Hot 100 , things were still mostly focused on Pop, Disco, and R&B. There were probably less than 10 rock songs on that chart of 100. Listen to the story of this song, it’s pretty dark. Thing’s weren’t so overtly macabre yet. It was still a pretty top 40 kinda time back then. As another track from the Don Kirshner Presents Rock Power vinyl LP, this song provided good context for me somewhere in between David Essex - Rock On and Black Sabbath - Paranoid.
Obviously the Five Man Electrical Band song Signs is the classic rock radio hit they’re best known for. I don’t even remember ever hearing Werewolf on the radio, but they both charted in the early 70’s. Don’t forget, this is just my own little classic rock retrospective here. Ha,ha,ha - I can practically hear you yawning and rolling your eyes on this one. There was no internet in the 70s, so your exposure and reach were a lot more limited than today. Discovering these abandoned scraps of rock n roll was like gold to me back then, even though some might think it’s pretty cheesy now.
